Re: Voluntary Redundancy...
Had a load of people take a payout from our place a couple of years ago. Loads decided to take a couple of months off - that turned into 6+ months - then started to moan they were skint and couldn't find a job.

If you take a payout don't hang about.

Applied over 20 times even tried swapping with a bloke that didn't want to leave

I don't understand Voluntary Redundancy.
You can't make a person redundant, only the job they do. eg..... So if all the chefs at a restaurant took VR, there would be no more cooking jobs available there.......ever.

Not sure why Pancho would be keen to leave his job, unless of course he hates having to be on WHO all day.
Also why would anyone offer him sound advice, comes across as a fat cunt and also it looks like when it comes to matters outside the playground a bit dim too.

I doubt you'll have the voluntary option Pauncho.

Re: Voluntary Redundancy...
Is there any incentive to take voluntary? We offered an extra grand tax free If there is nothing to be made for taking Voluntary sit it out.
The reason you may not like your job maybe made redundant. Not sure if this bit is Law but is in force in my company if you take voluntary you can never reapply to the company for a job.

The last company (over 10 years & 2 employees ago) I took voluntary redundancy for played the game very cunningly.
They said redundancies were on the cards.
They had a set number of positions per dept to let go.
If you volunteered you got an ok pay-off with no caps.
But it was up to your manager to agree if you could go.
However if you didn't volunteer, you could be picked and get the bar govt statutory minimum.
I took the voluntary but other colleagues didn't, only to be let go anyway on a pittance in relation to their high salaries.

What skills would they be then? I heard the government had banned civil servants from opening any windows before lunch, so they'd have something to do in the afternoon.

Brilliant
The school janitor claiming he's been offered voluntary redundancy.

You could always get a job handing out soap in a nightclub bog, more your thing ;)

Interesting ditcher

I recently quit a permanent post at work to take a fixed term on 2 pay grades higher, with either redundancy pay or redeployment in 2 years pay protection at the end. I got it all in writing. Nowhere was a cap mentioned though my layout as it stands would be less than that anyway)

You need to find out what they are offering and then think about how long that will last you.

Wow great insight there

You need to find out what they are offering and then think about how long that will last you. You also need to consider the timing of quitting, as this time of year is slow for recruitment as well as between late May to August
.I was made redundant in March this year, but with Easter and the election things were slow, got offered a job In May/June but something went tits up between the guy that offered me the job and their HR Dept, then went quiet over the summer, until got job offer end of summer

Re: Voluntary Redundancy...
There is no easy answer because it depends on an individual's circumstances. If it is from a job with a good pension that is steadily being built up, there is a mortgage and family to consider then hold on. If the individual has no commitments, no pension to lose and is bore with the job then take a good redundancy offer.

My old man took it from standard chartered bank 25 years ago after 35 years service. Massive lump sum and 1.5k a month pension for life.

When he dies I'm minted!!! ;o)

Took £45k 13 years ago from the Royal Mail and it was without question the best career move I ever made. If your contemplating it Pancho and you've not got ridiculous overheads then my view is take it and run to pastures new.

Re: Voluntary Redundancy...
There is always the risk if you turn it down, the company nose dives and you end up being made redundant done the line, fighting all the others scrabbling for the limited jobs available where the salaries will be lower due to market forces.
The kicker though is the statutory payments through non-voluntary redundancy.
People aren't usually aware about the caps

You’ll normally be entitled to statutory redundancy pay if you’re an employee and you’ve been working for your current employer for 2 years or more.

You’ll get:

half a week’s pay for each full year you were under 22
one week’s pay for each full year you were 22 or older, but under 41
one and half week’s pay for each full year you were 41 or older
Length of service is capped at 20 years and weekly pay is capped at £475. The maximum amount of statutory redundancy pay is £14,250
